In an attempt to divert the anger and frustration of Ghanains fron the ghc 22 billion losses incurred by Goldbod in the 2025 operation year, Sammy Gyamfy went bonkers with wild and libellous allegations against the Minority Leader, Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin but his PR Mchanine struggled to deflect as Ghanaians continue to demand accountability .
Meanwhile, the Minority
Leader , has signalled his intention to pursue legal action over what he describes as false and defamatory statements made against him by GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
The Effutu MP’s decision follows a heated public confrontation between the two men over the Minority’s demand for answers concerning the reported financial losses associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Mr Gyamfi has accused Afenyo-Markin of being an “extortionist” and challenged him to take the matter to court if he considers the allegation defamatory. He has also maintained that he is prepared to defend the allegation before a court.
Afenyo-Markin has now taken up that challenge.
In a statement on Saturday, August 22, the Minority Leader said he would pursue “the appropriate legal remedies” over what he described as defamatory statements made against him personally.
‘I WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED’
The Minority Leader rejected suggestions that his scrutiny of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s gold programme was motivated by personal or improper considerations.
He insisted that his actions were rooted in Parliament’s constitutional responsibility to scrutinise public institutions and demand accountability for the management of public resources.
“As Minority Leader in Parliament, my responsibility is to help Parliament discharge its constitutional oversight function.”
Afenyo-Markin further argued that personal attacks were being deployed to divert public attention from the substantive financial questions he had raised.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of the Minority’s demand for greater accountability over reported losses of more than US$1.7 billion, or approximately GH¢22 billion, linked to the scaling-up of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
The Minority has maintained that the reported losses require rigorous parliamentary scrutiny.
The Minority further says that personal attacks will not stop its scrutiny of GoldBod.
