Pressure is mounting on the government as opposition-aligned groups have announced a major demonstration in Accra on Thursday, August 6, 2026, to protest what they describe as an erosion of Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 5:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court before proceeding through the principal streets of Accra to Parliament and ending at Jubilee House, where organizers say they will present three separate petitions to the Supreme Court, Parliament and the Presidency.
According to the organizers, the protest is intended to draw national attention to what they characterize as a series of actions by the government that threaten democratic governance and the rule of law. Among the issues they intend to highlight are allegations of interference with the judiciary, selective application of justice, the use of state institutions to target political opponents, suppression of free speech, and the imposition of stringent bail conditions on opposition figures.
The organizers also allege that the government is seeking to revive a public tribunal system to prosecute political opponents and have raised concerns about what they describe as a “veiled third-term agenda” involving President John Dramani Mahama.
They argue that these developments undermine constitutional governance and are urging Ghanaians from all walks of life to participate in what they describe as a peaceful demonstration to defend democracy.
“Our democracy is under attack, and all well-meaning Ghanaians must rise to defend it,” the organizers said in a statement announcing the protest.
The planned demonstration is expected to attract political activists, civil society members and supporters from across the country. As of press time, the government had not publicly responded to the specific allegations made by the organizers.
Security agencies are expected to provide protection along the protest route to ensure that the demonstration proceeds peacefully and in accordance with the Public Order Act
