The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has thrown his full weight behind Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin in the Minority’s campaign to demand accountability over the reported US$1.7 billion loss associated with Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Dr. Bawumia met the Minority Leader at his private residence in Accra on Monday morning, where the two discussed internal party matters and the agenda confronting the Minority as Parliament reconvenes for an emergency sitting convened by the Speaker.
According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, Dr. Bawumia expressed full confidence in his leadership of the Minority and urged him to remain focused on what he described as the critical issue of the losses arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
The Minority Leader said Dr. Bawumia specifically cautioned him against attempts to divert public attention from the reported loss, which he said amounted to more than US$1.7 billion, equivalent to about 1.5 percent of Ghana’s GDP.
The figure, according to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, is contained in the International Monetary Fund’s August 2026 assessment of Ghana’s programme.
“Do Not Be Distracted”
Dr. Bawumia reportedly urged the Minority to use every avenue available within Parliament’s rules to ensure that the government of President John Dramani Mahama is made to account to Ghanaians for the loss.
He also commended the Minority Caucus for its efforts so far in raising questions about the financial implications of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin said he assured Dr. Bawumia that the matter had become a national accountability issue for the Minority and would be pursued to the fullest extent of its constitutional and parliamentary mandate.
“This is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
GoldBod Investigation Tops Minority Agenda
The Minority Leader further disclosed that the reported losses involving GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana would remain firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament resumes.
He said the Minority would not relent until the government provides satisfactory explanations to the Ghanaian people.
The Minority has maintained that the scale of the reported loss raises serious questions about the management of public resources and demands parliamentary scrutiny.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s latest comments suggest that the GoldBod controversy will be one of the major issues confronting Parliament during its emergency sitting.

The Minority Leader pledge that his caucus would remain resolute in its pursuit of accountability.
“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve.”
