NPP to Petition Chief Justice Over Manhandling of Abronye DC

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to petition Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on Friday, May 22, over what it describes as judicial misconduct by the judge who presided over Circuit Court 9 in the case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
The party says its decision follows what it considers unfair treatment of Abronye during the legal proceedings, particularly his nine-day remand in custody. According to the NPP, the circumstances of the case warranted bail from the onset rather than detention.
Addressing journalists after court proceedings on Wednesday, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, disclosed that the NPP would formally petition the Chief Justice to investigate what it believes was misconduct on the part of the trial judge.
His comments came after the court granted Abronye bail in the sum of GHS100,000 with two sureties, following days of legal arguments over his detention.
The NPP maintains that Abronye’s remand was unjustified and amounted to an abuse of judicial discretion. Party officials further alleged that the conduct of the judge throughout the proceedings appeared prejudicial and unfair toward the outspoken politician.
“The circumstances of this case did not justify keeping Abronye in custody for nine days,” party officials argued, insisting that the handling of the matter raises broader concerns about fairness, impartiality, and the protection of legal rights within the judicial process.
Abronye is currently standing trial on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news. Prosecutors say the charges stem from comments he allegedly made against a Circuit Court judge in a viral social media video.
The case has generated significant public and political attention, with supporters of the NPP describing the proceedings as politically motivated, while others argue that the matter should be allowed to proceed through the courts without political interference.
The planned petition is expected to intensify public scrutiny over the conduct of judicial officers and the broader debate about judicial independence and accountability in Ghana’s justice system.
