The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando, has been arrested by the police.
Mr. Yakubu was arrested when he, together with his lawyer, former Deputy Attorney-General, Mr Alfred Tuah Yeboah, honoured an invitation to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters at about 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 12.
However, upon arrival, they were informed by officers at the command that there was no record of such an invitation, despite earlier communication directing them to report there.
Reacting to the arrest, the NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, in a statement dated Monday, April 13, described the action as unwarranted and troubling for Ghana’s democratic credentials.
The statement further explained that subsequent engagement with the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra indicated that Mr Yakubu was actually required in the capital.
It added that the CID in Accra then instructed the Bono Regional Police CID to arrest him and transfer him to Accra, where he is currently being conveyed.
The NPP said it views the development as an example of the use of state security apparatus to intimidate and silence dissenting voices under the current administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
The party also raised concerns over what it described as threats to free speech and civil liberties, questioning the broader implications of the arrest.
Additionally, the NPP suggested the incident may be a diversion from pressing national issues, including LGBTQ-related debates, economic challenges such as rising cost of living, fuel and utility tariff increases, and what it called unmet policy promises.
The party called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and urged authorities to respect due process, uphold the rule of law, and protect citizens’ fundamental rights.
