Ghanaian Businesses Urged to Seize AfCFTA Opportunities Across Africa’s 1.4 Billion Market

Ghanaian businesses have been encouraged to strategically position themselves to take full advantage of the enormous opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which provides access to a market of more than 1.4 billion people across the African continent.

Speaking during a discussion on the theme, “Unlocking Africa’s Single Market: How Can Ghanaian Businesses Win Under AfCFTA?” on Channel One TV as part of the Citi Business Festival on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Acting Head of the National Coordination Office at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Benjamin Asiam, underscored the transformative potential of the agreement for Ghanaian enterprises.

According to him, AfCFTA presents a unique opportunity for businesses to move beyond domestic markets and tap into one of the world’s largest free trade zones.

“We have a population of over 1.4 billion people and also a GDP of more than $3 trillion. And so if we trade with each other, we see Africa as one market, we trade with each other, we’ll benefit, the wealth of Africa will stay in Africa, and Africa will be better for it,” he stated.

Mr. Asiam explained that AfCFTA, which brings together 54 African countries, is designed to promote preferential trade among member states by reducing barriers and creating a more competitive environment for intra-African commerce.

He noted that the agreement is particularly significant given Africa’s historical dependence on exporting raw materials to markets outside the continent, a model that has often yielded limited benefits for African economies.

“Africa has been exporting raw materials to the rest of the world for a long period of time, and we are not benefiting. So this opportunity is a very critical one,” he emphasized.

The trade official highlighted Ghana’s pivotal role in the establishment and advancement of AfCFTA, pointing to the country’s active participation in negotiations and its successful hosting of the Secretariat in Accra.

He stressed that Africa’s growing population and expanding economic output offer significant prospects for Ghanaian businesses seeking to diversify markets, increase exports, and strengthen their competitive edge across the continent.

Mr. Asiam urged local enterprises to embrace innovation, improve product standards, and explore cross-border partnerships to fully leverage the benefits of the continental trade agreement.

As implementation of AfCFTA gathers momentum, industry experts believe Ghanaian businesses that position themselves early could emerge as major beneficiaries of Africa’s evolving economic integration agenda.
