BAWUMIA MOURNS FORMER NPP CHAIRMAN ODOI-SYKES

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Samuel Odoi-Sykes, a founding member of the party who served as National Chairman and Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada.
Dr Bawumia described the late Odoi-Sykes as a distinguished party stalwart whose contributions to the NPP and Ghana would remain an enduring part of the country’s political history.
In a tribute, the former Vice-President highlighted Odoi-Sykes’ historic role in leading the NPP to its first general election victory in the Fourth Republic in 2000.
The victory marked a defining moment in Ghana’s democratic journey, as the NPP, under the leadership of then-presidential candidate John Agyekum Kufuor, defeated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to form the next government.
Dr Bawumia said the late party chairman occupied an honoured place in the NPP’s history, having played a significant role in the party’s development and electoral success.
He also acknowledged Odoi-Sykes’ service to the country as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, describing his contributions to both the party and the nation as worthy of lasting recognition.
Expressing his condolences, Dr Bawumia extended his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, friends and loved ones of the deceased.
“Farewell, Chairman. May your soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
Odoi-Sykes’ passing represents a moment of mourning for the NPP, particularly among members who witnessed the party’s formative years and its eventual rise to power in 2000.
His legacy will be remembered in the party’s history for his leadership during a crucial period in its political development.
