Seychelles and Mauritius Top List in 10 rich African nations in the 2026 HelloSafe Prosperity Index

Seychelles and Mauritius Have topped the List  of 10 rich African nations in the 2026 HelloSafe Prosperity Index

The ranking evaluated 186 countries beyond the traditional Gross Domestic Product-based comparisons, exposing a disconnect between headline economic expansion and household-level welfare.

Comparing prosperity scores among African countries, the survey ranked two islanders, Seychelles and Mauritius, in first and second positions, respectively, delivering a shocking reality to South Africa.

The 2026 HelloSafe Prosperity Index applied GDP per capita, Gross National Income, Human Development Index, income distribution, and relative poverty rate. The methodology ignores economies where wealth creation is not broadly shared.

Consequently, Seychelles scored 98.09 out of a possible 100, placing it at the top as the most prosperous country in 2026. It is followed by Mauritius, which attained 77.09, and Algeria came third (54.24).

The archipelago nation boasts the continent’s highest GDP per capita on a purchasing-power-parity basis at $42,110, combined with Africa’s highest HDI score of 0.848.

Mauritius follows with a Gross National Income of $12,570 and an HDI of 0.806. These nations are the only two African countries classified as “very high” human development by the United Nations Development Programme.

The scores are normalised within the African panel and are therefore not directly comparable to the numerical values of the global ranking,” the team clarified.
