Putin under pressure as Russia’s war machine falters

Exactly how many Russian pieces of equipment have been lost in the fighting is difficult to know since Moscow doesn’t provide information on its losses. However, there are some governments and groups that have provided estimates of the Kremlin’s losses.

Russian forces have suffered over 1.2 million casualties, including approximately 325,000 killed, since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Personnel Losses

Since February 2022, Russian military casualties—including killed, wounded, and missing—are estimated at around 1,244,560, with daily losses averaging 1,000 to 1,100 troops in early 2026. Fatalities alone are estimated between 243,000 and 352,000, with over 160,000 confirmed names compiled by independent sources. These losses are unprecedented for any major power since World War II and have been rising steadily, with 2025 alone accounting for roughly 410,000 additional casualties. Russia’s reliance on contract soldiers, reservists, and even prisoners has increased to replenish its forces, often incentivized with substantial financial bonuses.

Equipment Losses

Russian military equipment losses are extensive, reflecting the intensity of the conflict and Ukraine’s effective targeting of armored and aerial assets. As of February 6, 2026, reported losses include:

Strategic and Operational Context

Despite these staggering losses, Russia continues to maintain a large force of approximately 711,000–712,000 personnel in Ukraine, including operational reserves. However, advances are extremely slow, averaging 15–70 meters per day in major offensives, with less than 1.5% of Ukrainian territory gained since 2024. The war has settled into a grinding attrition conflict, with Russia trading large numbers of personnel and equipment for minimal territorial gains.
