The death toll from the ongoing tribal conflict in Gbinyiri in the Savannah Region has risen to 18, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The Savannah Regional Director of NADMO, Mr. Mahama Zakaria, confirmed the figures during a media briefing on Thursday.

“As per my briefing on 28th August 2025, eight persons were killed from two communities. Officially, we are reporting a total of 18 deaths so far from this conflict,” he said.

The clashes, which erupted over a disputed parcel of land between two rival factions, have also left several people with gunshot wounds. Security agencies are yet to bring the situation under full control.

According to NADMO, the violence has forced about 12,000 residents—mostly women and children—from Gbinyiri and surrounding communities to flee their homes. Many of the displaced persons have sought refuge at the Sawla Police Station, where temporary tents have been erected to provide shelter.

Local authorities say the humanitarian situation remains dire as food, water, and medical supplies are urgently needed. Community leaders have appealed for calm while calling on government to step up efforts to restore peace.

The Savannah Region, which is the home region of President John Dramani Mahama, has in recent years witnessed sporadic land and tribal disputes. Analysts warn that unless lasting solutions are found, the recurring clashes will continue to claim lives and destabilize communities.
