Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new internal survey conducted by the Africa Policy Lens (APL).
The nationwide poll, which sampled 30,681 NPP delegates across all 16 regions, revealed that 63.89% of respondents favoured Dr. Bawumia as their preferred candidate for the party’s 2028 presidential ticket.
Trailing behind him is Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who garnered 28.9%, positioning him as the second most popular contender. Other candidates received comparatively lower support, including Dr. Bryan Acheampong (4.6%), Yaw Osei Adutwum (1.5%), and Kwabena Agyapong (1.2%).
The regional breakdown shows Dr. Bawumia leading in 14 out of the 16 regions, while Hon. Agyapong topped the poll in the Central and Western North regions.
According to APL’s report, Bawumia’s commanding lead reflects a growing sentiment among NPP delegates and grassroots supporters who see him as the most marketable and unifying figure to lead the party to victory in 2028. His steady campaign strategy and broad appeal across ethnic and regional lines have bolstered his standing within the party.
Political analysts suggest the findings could shape internal party dynamics and influence upcoming discussions as the NPP prepares for its January 31, 2026, presidential primaries. Party officials are expected to assess these figures carefully in crafting strategies to maintain unity and ensure a strong showing in the general elections.
As preparations intensify, Dr. Bawumia’s solid support base may provide momentum for his campaign, strengthening his bid to become the NPP’s next flagbearer and potentially Ghana’s next president.
