Ashanti region New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman hopeful, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah’s
call to President John Mahama to open the abandoned Local Government University at Akomadan in Offinso Municipality has gained traction.
Many opinion leaders including some chiefs and Assembly men in the offinso Municipality have joined the call , pleading with President mahama to consider opening the university to save the investments made in building the infrastructure.
At a media engagements recently in offinso, kumasi, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah stated that opening the university will boost the local economy and also help provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in the area.
” l dont understand why such a huge investments will be allowed to go waste because of partisan politics and the fact that the school was started by the previous administration. I plead with the President to consider opening it and employ his party people who have been on him for jobs to work there. After all we are all Ghanaians.”
Asanteman COKA who is also a former Afigya Kwabre South Constituency Chairman for many years stated that governance is continuous and so the current government should not allow an investments like this to go waste.
” the previous government led by Nana Akufo-Addo granted the executive instrument and completed all the infrastructure works needed to start the university in Akomadan to train professionals to address local governance issues. Unfortunately, the NPP lost power whiles awaiting the passage of the bill to operationalize the school. Since then the school has been abandoned and the facilities are fast deteriorating. We cannot allow the investments made to go waste. “
According to Asanteman COKA, the university is intended to help address the low university enrolment rate in Ghana.
” Available statistics show that only 20% of Senior High School graduates get to university. Therefore, adding another university will be a noble one which clearly will help increase access. “
The project funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund, includes facilities like hostels, modern and lecture halls.
Ghana’s decentralisation is evolving and needs professionals in the area to help address the unique challenges associated with it.
The university is therefore crucial in helping train professionals who will help strengthen the local governance issues in the country.
