Two persons have been hospitalised after sustaining burn injuries in a fuel tanker fire on the Koforidua–Mamfe stretch at Amanprobi in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, March 4.
The victims, identified as the driver of the tanker and his mate, are currently receiving treatment at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital. Hospital sources indicate that the two are responding to treatment.
The incident occurred when the fuel tanker was involved in an accident, which subsequently triggered a fire that engulfed a section of the busy road, causing temporary disruption to vehicular traffic.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were swiftly dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Speaking on the incident, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Service, DOIII Ignatius Kwamena Baidoo, said firefighters arrived at the scene at about 10:00 a.m. and found the tanker already engulfed in flames.
“They got to the scene at 10 a.m. and met the fire while it was alight. They were able to bring it under control by 11:20 a.m. and finally extinguished it shortly after,” he stated.
He added that further checks by fire officers confirmed that the driver and his mate had sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Authorities have since commenced investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
