Bawumia Triumphs!

Secures NPP Flagbearership with Decisive Victory

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been officially declared the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general elections, following a commanding and outright win in the party’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026.

The Electoral Commission released the final certified results after collation from all 333 polling centres nationwide, confirming that Dr. Bawumia polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid votes cast by over 200,000 accredited delegates. This decisive margin exceeded the 50% threshold required for an outright victory, eliminating the need for a run-off and cementing Bawumia’s position as the NPP’s presidential candidate heading into the 2028 polls.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong finished a distant second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong placed third with 36,303 votes (18.53%). Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes (1.02%), with minor candidates and rejected ballots making up the balance. The primaries showcased Bawumia’s broad national appeal, as he secured strong performances across key regions, including dominant showings in Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern, and others. The Results indicate he won in 14 of Ghana’s 16 regions, with only Volta (won by Acheampong) and Central (won by Agyapong) going to rivals.

In a victory address at the NPP headquarters, the former Vice President expressed deep appreciation to delegates and emphasized the need for party unity and inclusivity.”This victory is a testament to the trust you have placed in our shared vision for a progressive, innovative, and united Ghana,” Bawumia said. “To those who supported other aspirants and to the many who stayed away in recent times due to concerns, I hear you. The NPP will listen, reconcile, and rebuild stronger. Together, we will win in 2028.”

Campaign communications director Dennis Miracles Aboagye highlighted the role of grassroots loyalty and effective messaging in the outcome, describing it as a reflection of Bawumia’s deep connection with party structures.
