…Touted as Unifier Capable of Leading NPP to 2028 Victory
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been hailed as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) strongest hope for reclaiming political power in the 2028 general elections, with his campaign coordinator describing him as the one figure capable of uniting a disappointed and fractured party base after the 2024 defeat.
According to Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore and a key strategist for the Bawumia campaign, the NPP urgently requires a flagbearer who can rebuild internal cohesion, restore morale, and galvanise the grassroots for a comeback.
Speaking to delegates in Asokwa during a visit by former Second Lady Samira Bawumia, Dr. Ayew Afriyie argued that the NPP’s 2024 loss was not the fault of Dr. Bawumia, insisting that such claims are politically unfair and unsupported by the facts.
“Naturally, people will be disappointed after a party loses political power. But in such moments, it takes a true unifier to bring everyone back together—and Dr. Bawumia is that person,” he said.
Why the NPP Lost 2024 — Coordinator Lists Key Factors
The MP dismissed the narrative that Bawumia was solely responsible for the party’s defeat, saying “every truthful person” within the NPP knows the real reasons behind the loss.
He outlined several contributing factors, including:
- Nationwide apathy within the party’s base
- Policy backlash from the introduction of the E-Levy
- Unpopular taxes, including those imposed on sports betting
- General dissatisfaction with some government decisions
“These were major issues that affected our support, and every delegate knows this,” he stressed, adding that attempts to heap the blame on Dr. Bawumia were “totally wrong.”
Bawumia Positioned for a 2028 Comeback
Dr. Ayew Afriyie expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia, with broad popularity and a reputation for bridge-building, is the NPP’s best chance of returning to Jubilee House in 2028.
He urged party members to close ranks, work harder, and rally behind a leader who can “unify, energise, and inspire the party again.”
“With unity and focus, and with Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer, the NPP can win political power in 2028,” he assured delegates.
