Akufo-Addo Congratulates Bawumia on NPP Flagbearer Victory

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated Dr Mahamudu Bawumia following his election as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

Speaking after the official declaration of the presidential primary results by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday, January 31, the former President described Dr Bawumia’s victory as decisive.

“Let me congratulate Dr Bawumia on a decisive victory,” Akufo-Addo said.

He also commended NPP delegates for their clear choice, noting that the outcome eliminated the need for a runoff.

“Your verdict is unmistakable; you spared us the uncertainty of a runoff,” he added.

Akufo-Addo described Dr Bawumia as a leader with vision, competence, and clarity of purpose, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the party to victory in the 2028 general elections.

The former President further urged members of the NPP to remain united as the party prepares for the next electoral contest.

Dr Bawumia won the presidential primaries with 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast. His closest contender, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, polled 23.76 per cent.

Other aspirants in the race were former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
