Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has officially announced his bid for the National Chairmanship of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Describing his decision as a “call to duty,” Agyarko stated that he reached this decision after consultations with family, close associates, and grassroots supporters of the party.
Agyarko, who served in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration from 2017 to 2018, brings decades of experience in both banking and politics. He previously contested for the NPP’s flagbearer position in 2007 and has remained an influential figure within the party.
His candidacy adds further weight to what is shaping up to be a highly competitive chairmanship race. He will face off against two prominent party figures: Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and former General Secretary John Boadu, who has also served as the party’s national organizer and youth organizer.
With the NPP heading towards its next national congress, the chairmanship contest is expected to focus heavily on themes of party unity and internal discipline.
